Yesterday I watched the movie Slumdog Millionaire. the main character in the story lived in the slums of Mumbai – a harsh life where survival is difficult. After may adventures and set backs, the story had a happy ending with the main character overcoming all obstacles. When it was over I ejected the DVD from the player. It had not really happened. It was a film with the main character an actor pretending to be someone else.

Your life is similar to a movie with you taking the lead part. Unlike a movie you probably take the story of your life very seriously. It is full or drama, tragedy, triumph, suffering, joy – and you get caught up in it all.

A DVD is a digital device, which means that all it contains are a lot of numbers. The DVD player then translates these numbers into sound and vision.  In the same way your senses take in energy – light energy and sound energy which your brain translates into the things that you see and hear. Electrical activity takes place in your brain and you experience this activity as thoughts and feelings. The way you experience all this you call ‘reality’. But, is your reality any more real than the images and sound from a DVD?

Why do you take you life so seriously? Why do things matter that much? If you awaken to the non-dual perspective then non of this so called reality is…well… real. None of this is who you are. The world of your thoughts, feelings and senses, is a vehicle that enables you to function in this world.  You are not the vehicle.

You are the actor playing the part of you. What happens if you stop playing the role? What happens if you step back from the story that you call your life and see through the dream that you are in?

It is such a relief to stop taking things so seriously, to allow your thoughts and feeling to come and go, to witness the story, to let life flow in its own natural way.
