The Spiderman Illusion
I am writing this in a hotel room in Orlando, Florida. I ‘ve just been on the Spiderman ride in a theme park. You sit in an open topped car and go on a journey through a city. As the ride continues characters from the Spiderman comics jump on to the front of the car. Then the car flies through the air, climbing to the top of a skyscraper before falling down at great speed straight towards the road below.
This all seems very real, but of course it is all an illusion created through images on screens viewed through 3d glasses that give the illusion of reality, and enhanced through the movement of the car in response to the images. All this fools the senses into thinking that the Spiderman adventure is really happening.
This is a bit like how you lead your life -believing that the story of your life is real, and that it all matters so much. You feel as though you really are falling fast, heading for a hard landing. Unlike the Spiderman ride, it is not over in a few minutes with the feeling of relief that you never were in real danger. Your life goes on for years and years, and you are so caught up in the actions and drama of it all, forgetting that who you really are can never be harmed.
Awakening is seeing what is really happening in your life. It is seeing the dreamlike nature of it all. And then, like the Spiderman ride, you sit inside the vehicle that you call your body and enjoy the ride. Then life is fun.
