Can Words Express Non-Duality?

I’ve been making an audio recording today where I have been trying to answer the question:

What is Non-Duality?

There is a problem that all non-duality teachers come against. How can you express what is essentially indescribable?

Awakening to the non-duality is like awakening from a dream that has held you in delusion all your life.  It is subtle, simple yet profound. You cannot think yourself awake, you cannot will yourself to be awake. It’s more like a soap bubble gently bursting.

If someone says to me – describe what it is like in less than 100 words, I find that I cannot. And yet, thousands upon thousands of words have been written or spoken on non-duality.  And yes, none of these words are real. None of these words tell it like it is.

Does that mean that I and others should stop writing?  A case could certainly be made for this. Why do I continue to speak? Somehow as I speak or write, there is a certain type of energy that arises. A clarity of vision appears as if it were not coming from me. I’m not talking about chanelling here, just that my ego, my knowledge mind, seems to somehow step aside and words just flow. Before I speak or write, I have little idea about what will emerge.  In the East this process is known as satsang. In satsang there is an subtle energy and it is this energy that can communicate more powerfully than just the meaning of the words.

I once attended teachings by an eminent Tibetan Llama. After a day of very complicated lectures on yoga and consciousness someone asked him a question:

“What is the point of all this. It’s so difficult. Where does it get me?”

“Come to the end of understanding all these things, “he replied, “Master it all, then  give it all up and  simply lie in the sun belly-bathing.”

So maybe one day I’ll shut up, close down my word processor and expose my belly to the sun!
